The 90's Age was a subset of the Modern Age, a time period of comics that took place in the 1990s. It saw the rise of anti-heroes as main characters, such as Marvel Comics' Cable and Image Comics' Spawn. Comics in this period were more "extreme" than others of the Modern Age that preceded or followed it. Characters were often more violent, given to excessive vices such as drinking, smoking, and swearing openly in the comic. Eventually, these changes were integrated back into the larger Modern Age motif of darker stories and more-complex characters, and the wave of 90's-era comics faded into the background.
